23rd October 2018:

When we made the booking i requested a quiet room. When we arrived at the accommodation we were told there was a beer festival in the bar next door so Andy had moved us to a more expensive room at the back of the house for no extra charge. I was very impressed with this and we had a quiet room which was very comfortable, clean and spacious. The bed was especially comfortable with very soft sheets. The room was well equipped with plenty of extra towels, drinks and toiletries. The breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked for us. Andy and Karen were attentive without being invasive. The b and b was in a perfect location with easy access to all attractions. We ate at the Italian restaurant and 'the smugglers' restaurant, both were very good.

Tips:

Car park on the harbour was £4.40 for 24 hours

13th September 2018:

Very friendly helpful owners. Only comments would be that the ensuite in our room was rather dated (plans in place to update) and the shower needs completely replacing to improve the pressure and heat the water up more quickly. Full English breakfast provided but perhaps menu could include a bit more variety. Parking situation is not made clear on Booking.com (need to pay in nearby public car park) but owner has taken this up with Booking.com.

Tips:

Two excellent restaurants for evening meals are Take Thyme Fish Restaurant and The Restaurant 71 (both in Fore Street - 5 minute walk from B & B). Very popular restaurants - booking essential.

Andy and Karen were lovely hosts they went out their way to make our stay as pleasant As pleasant as possible entertaining our 3 year old. Going over and above in service and breakfast was really good! The only down side I would say was lack of parking however it’s typical of such seaside towns.

Tips:

Friday night we hit the weatherspoons just opposite however as ithe weather turned it was packed. We went to cook Island instead. We wish we talked to Andy as he has some recommended local restraunts not needing a drive but cook island was pleasant enough.

Andy and Karen were great hosts, making our stay very enjoyable, it was like staying with family. Accommodation was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was well cooked and plenty of it.Andy put our ice packs into the freezer ready for the cool box the next day and made a flask of coffee to take with us. The location was great, only 2 mins from shops and restaurants, Witherspoons was just across the road. Parking was 5 mins from Acorn Lodge and was £4.60 for all day, very reasonable. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay and I would highly recommend to friends and family.

Tips:

Smugglers Inn does superb steaks with a good choice of other food on the menu. Witherspoons offer a large choice of beers at a good price. There is a Damien Hurst sculpture in the harbor, well worth a look,it is like marmite, you either love it or hate it. Tunnels Beach is a private beach £2.50 entrance for adults, very interesting how the tunnel to the sea was created.

Very good and attentive hosting by this family team. They offer very good value and service. Nice clean room and decent breakfast. You get the feeling the hosts will do their best to help their guests and ensure their comfort.

Tips:

The Quay by artist Damien Hirst. The interior is designed using Hirst's signature butterfly wall paper, taxonomic display of fish specimens and of course mini models of Verity; the colossus overlooking the harbour. Teas and coffees are really good, and competitively priced for the area. In the high street, the Olive Room and Michelin chef Thomas Carr's newest bar and diner, offer casual and fine dining. I hear Alfie and the Kaiser does a good steak but being Vegetarian, I didn't try! The nearby towns and beaches are all worth a visit. All details are provided at Acorn.

20th September 2017:

I spent 6 days in single room. Room a bit small but it was clean and light and during time I was happy for smaller size. I had no sea view, but look from my window let me cry from laugh. There was army of garden gnomes in a greenhouse, looking into my window. Funny company. Place is on perfect strategic place few steps from Ilfracombe harbour, so ideal for small local trips or sailing to Lundy island. And owner were one of the greatest things there. While Anne was delightful spirit of the house and keeping things perfect and ready, Hugh was source of fun and informations about local history. And it always brightened my morning when I heard his singing in a kitchen. Breakfast was big and tasty. I was happy there. I can only hope that new owners will be as great as Anne and Hugh and that they will keep spirit of this house. I can recommend that to everybody.

Tips:

There is bus station righ before Acorn lodge and you can easily catch bus for small local trips. Also great food is in Admiral Collingham or if you dont mind for something more expensive, than go to Smugglers. Its easy to organise trip to Lundy while you stay there. And of course there are planty places to see around. From Woolacombe, Mortehoe till Linton and Lynmouth or Chambercombe manor. :-) I would personaly recommend small but crazy local museum in Ilfracombe and if there is a hot sunny day, why not to go to Tunnel beaches.

Acorn Lodge was one of the highlights of our trip to Southwest England. Anne and Hugh are lovely and made us feel like family. Their tips, advice, stories, etc. were so welcome. Breakfast was delicious. The location was just perfect right by the bus stop from Barnstaple. The harbor, High Street, the scenic walks along the coast were close by. Thoroughly enjoyable stay in all ways.

Tips:

Shops along high street, climb the Capstone hill to see the statue of Katy and admire the views. Walk down to the picturesque harbor and see the Verity statue, walk along the coast, relax in the Runnymede gardens in town center. Take side-trips to Barnstaple, Woolfracombe and nearby towns like Lynton/Lynmouth. Great and reasonable restaurant is the Wetherspoon opposite the Acorn Lodge.

Our hosts, Hugh and Ann, were the best things about Ilfracombe. We were very well looked after and, from now on, I want to hear all my stories with an Irish accent. Beds were heavenly comfortable and breakfast was good. Great place to relax and unwind.

Tips:

If you're laid back the Grampas Inn at Lee (3 miles away) is a gem. In Ilfracombe we caught the evening sun at the Pier Brewery Tap and Grill - lovely. The George and Dragon steak and kidney pudding also highly recommended. Ilfracombe is a great base for exploring western Exmoor. We walked to the Hunters Inn - the best way to approach it. Peters Rock (near there) certainly worth the climb. Lundy retained its mystery in the mist but we saw puffins, shearwaters, fulmars, gannets, razorbills, guillemots, a petrel and porpoises from the MS Oldenberg en route - take your binoculars and wrap up warm to stay on deck. I'm still iffy about Verity - not sure I like my statues with guts. Makes sure Ilfracombe is also about Damien Hirst - hope it does it some good.

Hugh and Anne are the nicest genuine people you could wish to meet. They made our stay really special. The room was spotless and comfortable, and the breakfasts were magnificent. Acorn Lodge is situated very close to the rugged coast, and very central to all the amenities of Ilfracombe. We will be back later in the year for another pampering. I very much doubt if there is a finer place to stay in Devon, let alone Ilfracombe. Book with confidence.

Tips:

Witherspoons is just across the road, and is very popular. The Dolphin Chippy is by the Harbour and is excellent. The George & Dragon pub is the oldest pub in the area. The local museum is very interesting. There are a few restaurants that we didn't sample, but were assured that they were good, such as "71". Early season meant that some eating options had limited opening days. A small snack place well worth a visit is "Dolly's Cafe" on the Promenade; excellent fresh food made on the premises

A very friendly atmosphere, in perfect location. The owners were very helpful and friendly; breakfast was lovely and fresh and they ensured we had everything we needed. We could come and go as we pleased allowing us to enjoy a drink at the local weather spoons and site see the area; we really enjoyed our stay. The only suggestion I could make is a mirror in the room and to be aware parking is a nightmare on Fore Street. Although we did manage to find somewhere to park, we did have to consider cost and where we needed to park, however this is the same for all B and B's and hotels in this area. We certainly will be back and would recommend this B and B any day.

Tips:

It was their Victorian weekend in Ilfracombe which was brilliant, lots going on. We also visited Watermouth Castle which was amazing, perfect for couples who like a laugh and families; really enjoyed playing the old games.

The Acorn Lodge was everything we expected and more. A traditional seaside B&B - a period building, fixtures and fittings in a perfect position for the beach, shops and pubs. Owners Hugh and Ann made us feel welcome and well looked after from the start. We stayed in the low cost double at the top of the B&B - turned out to have it's own en suite - small, private and quiet and suited us perfectly. The full breakfast was perfect and set us up for the day - again all our needs were met , cereals, extra beans and toast provided. We felt thoroughly looked after! Hugh offered us tips on where to go and park and Ann couldn't do enough to provide everything we needed. I would recommend the Acorn Lodge unreservedly to anyone who is looking for a good value, clean and welcoming traditional B&B. It was quiet,in a perfect location and run by fabulous hosts.

Tips:

The Wetherspoons offers value for money food wise, although there are several pubs and restaurants in the area. The harbour area is worth a look and the beach is rugged and well enclosed. We visited Lynmouth and walked from there to Watersmeet - Hugh from the B&B recommended it - a must if you have time. A beautiful setting and wonderful way to spend a day. Cliff railway and scenery - like travelling back in time.

The b&b is family run and the owners go over and beyond guests expectations to make their stay as comfortable as possible (not to mention delicious home cooked breakfast!). I thoroughly enjoyed the stay and will be returning in the near future.

Great location, close to everything. Lovely, friendly and helpful hosts. Great breakfast - yogurt, fruit, cereals, full English/Irish, toast and jams. Room small but expected as we had an attic room with our own shower - clean, comfortable with tea and coffee so suited our needs fine. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Ilfracombe and the surrounding area - great value for money.

Tips:

Blacksands Bistro next door - good food, cool atmosphere and great cocktails. The Terrace tapas bar - loved this place! Went for the 'endless tapas' option and it was worth it. Good value for money and very tasty. The Quay (Damien Hirst's restaurant in the harbour close to Verity) - lovely place to sit in the sun with a drink and people watch. Would recommend walking the coastal path to Lee (steep at times but worth it) and back. Lee is a postcard pretty village with a good pub, The Grampus. Has a lovely bay where you can sit beside the sea in a cute cafe and have cream teas/lunch. Bring cash as there's no cash point in Lee and large minimum spends on cards.

Six of our double rooms are ensuite as explained to you and the one which is not is approx. £15 per night cheaper. This is your personal choice .For you we would recommend the ensuite next time and I think your score would go back up to top marks. No marks for value for money!!!
